Illusion and I
Traveled over the ocean
Hunting money trees.
-- Kijo

Issei's common past
Gritting one's teeth
Against exclusion.
-- Kotoe

More than a wayside stop.
-- Katsuko

Hope for my children
Helps me endure much from it
The alien land.
-- An Issei

Getting used to it
America now for me
The best place to live.

Immigrant records
Now and then a bloody page
Indicates the pain.
-- Shungo

For a little while
Encountering a person
Who was anti-Japanese
I rubbed against a spirit
Out of harmony with mine.
