The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English is unavailable again, the paperback 1995 2nd edition, but some used copies are available through this link to Amazon (to get to the used copies, click on the book title after you get to Amazon: i.e. click the link here and then click on the book title). It is the state-of-the-art dictionary for language learners, with all definitions confined to a 2000-word vocabulary.

Ample examples of usage, both standard and idiomatic, as well as the grammatical function of the words. Lavishly illustrated. Full page color thematics throughout.

In the meantime, while The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English was unavailable (click on book title again to get to used copies, starting at about $17), I suggested trying The Longman Dictionary of English Language and Culture, Paperback 3rd edition (January 13, 2000): I've seen older editions and they're amply and clearly illustrated

or the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English, an impressive book worth the approximately $30 it costs (as of April 2001)

Harrap's Giant Paperback Spanish Dictionary (Spanish-English; English-Spanish)

This is an excellent big little dictionary: very complete and clear and full of idiomatic examples.

The Ultimate Scene and Monologue Sourcebook: An Actor's guide to over 1000 Monologues and Scenes from More Than 300 Contemporary Plays, Ed Hooks

This book does not have the actual scenes, but directs you to where to find them. The reviews in the book give the "flavor of the character, situation, and play," as well as the level of difficulty and the strengths and weaknesses of the selection -- extremely helpful for non-native speakers of English searching for audition pieces.
